One of the few frustrations I have had with my beloved new iPhone is that I couldn't use my own sound files as ring tones. My last two smart phones let me load in and use my own MP3s, so it seemed ridiculous that the iPhone wouldn't. You know how Apple is about proprietary formats, though. You can only use M4R files as ringtones.
The good news is that I searched around on the interwebs until I found a quick, easy, and free solution. You can use iTunes to do an MP3-to-AAC conversion and then change the AAC file extensions to M4R. It works great. (Liz, I already set "Cutie Pie" as your ringtone.) Here's how to do it.
First you need your own sound files to use as ringtones. You could probably use an entire song, but I like to chop my songs down to 5- to 10-second snippets. You can do this using free audio editing software like Audacity. When you've got the files the way you like them, load them into iTunes.
The next step is to convert your sound files to AAC format. You can do this in iTunes as follows:
1. Under Preferences, select Import Settings and choose the AAC Encoder option.
2. Select the song you want to convert from your iTunes library.
3. Under the Advanced menu, select Create AAC Version.
The AAC version of the file will be added to your iTunes library.
4. Sort your library by date, go to the latest files, and find your file.
5. Right-click the file and choose Show in Windows Explorer. My files ended up in my iTunes Music folder under Unknown Artist\Unknown Album. Here's the sneaky part. The only difference between AAC format and M4R is the file extension. So...
6. Rename your AAC file with an M4R exension.
7. Double-click the M4R file and it will automatically load into iTunes. You'll find it in the Ringtones section. The next time you sync your phone, you can load on your ring tones!
