Nokia’s Music Store isn’t so far behind with a 22% share – 0.9 million people. “Many people thought Nokia’s music service was a flop, so it’s very good news for them to see what a nice share they’ve got,” comScore’s Alistair Hill tells us. “Why is this happening? Nokia Music Store is being heavily promoted using mobile advertising.”
He thinks this is an important point: Nokia has been advertising its Music Store on mobile websites, with ads focused on the store’s overall offering, but also on individual artists like Rihanna, Black Eyed Peas and Lady Gaga. Hill says that so far, labels haven’t followed Nokia’s example and invested much in mobile ad campaigns for their artists.
“Nobody’s really bothering to advertise music on the mobile internet, and I think the music companies are really missing a trick here,” says Hill. “Lots of people are listening to music on their phones, and around half of them are also browsing the mobile internet. There’s an opportunity to target people in terms of advertising at the point where they’re consuming the music.”
